If you are in need of purchasing a desk for your home or business office and are on a limited budget, before spending the retail price for a brand new one you should explore the option of purchasing a used office desk.

It is possible to find the exact style and size which you need in a used or refurbished desk through your local second hand stores or newspapers as well as online through internet stores such as Amazon.com. You also have the option to select a higher quality desk which is made out of solid wood such as oak for the same money or even less than the retail price of a brand new one made from cheaper materials such as pressboard.

To ensure that you are saving the most money possible you will first need to determine the style and size you will need. Whether you need a  regular writing, computer, or modular desk, measure the space which you have available to place your desk then check the retail prices in your local office supply or department store and comparison shop for a used office desk locally or online.

You also have the option of purchasing a slightly damaged desk and repairing it yourself which can sometimes is the cheapest way to go. You should have no problem saving a great deal of money on a  used office desk using any of these methods.

How do I get the smell of cigarette smoke out of a wooden desk?
I just purchased a used home office desk. It is solid wood. I didn't realize that it smelled so badly of cigarette smoke until it was delivered and is now sitting in my non-smoking house. Would Murphy's Oil Soap work? I would appreciate help as I really like the desk but I will not be able to keep it if I can't eliminate the odor.

Got the perfect idea for you! Fill up the tub with warm water and put in a bunch of fabric softener. Place a large sheet in there and let the sheet absorb the water and softener. Ring it out and shake it out. Place it over the desk completely. Let the sheet dry over the desk. The wood will absorb the moisture and scent of the fabric softener. You can also place a plug in air freshener by it to help. Whenever I hang a coat by my plug-in, it absorbs the smell...I get to work smelling like Fresh Cotton TM. Good luck - cig smell is gross.

put picnic charcoal on newspaper and lay it in the drawers. It absorbs all kinds of tough odors. Leave it for a week or two then wip it down with a good wood cleaner.

Two things has happened with your desk. First there is a oily smoke film on the finish. Second there is smoke odor absorbed into the under side where there is no finish. You could try Murphy's Oil Soap, but I have found that because you use it in water, sometimes that just distributes the oily film into the wood, especially where there is no varnish. One product that works well for us is a product from www.finefurniturecaresecrets.com

I bought a small wooden drawer at a garage sale and it smelled bad with cigarette smoke. What I did was put fabric softener sheets in the drawers. It took quite a few I kept doing it until the smell was gone. It did work. My husband made the suggestion they hang fabric softener sheets in the hospital rooms where he works as a nurse. i was amazed how it worked. I ended up putting the dryer sheets in my dresser drawers to keep my clothes fresh smelling and I put them through out my house too.

Backing soda. Backing soda is a natural odor elemator. If you take some small bolwles and put backing soda in them. Put them in the desk and the backing soda will get rid of the smoke smell. I would tell you to use vinagar but that wouldn't be very good for the wood. I'm a smoker.)

Since there is probably a "film" of smoke on the desk, use the Murphy's Oil Soap on the exterior, and inside of drawers, and when dry, Place a newspaper with charcoal briquetes on it, in the drawers and change them every few days. They will absorb the odor and leave it smelling clean and fresh. It's what I did and it worked perfectly. Hope this helps !
