What is a door sensor magnetic contacts?
Hi, As what the question above suggests, I'm wondering what are door magnetic contacts. I was originally thinking of buying a cctv camera, but, well, i can't afford it as of the moment. Are magnetic contacts functional as they are, or do I still need to hook them to a separate door alarm device? Thanks in advance!

It depends on how high tech you want to go. They make simple magnetic door alarms that are contained within the sensor. Basically they would hold a small battery and you would install them on the door (or window) and when the magnets become separated (the door/window opens) a shrill alarm will go off. Of course, these simple ones only work if you are in the building to hear it...if you're looking to secure a building that won't be occupied (as in a store overnight) you would need to purchase a full alarm system from a company that would notify you via phone when the alarm went off.

Here is an interesting wireless door/window alarm system that they sell at harbor freight: Basically each "contact point has a battery powered local alarm that wounds when it is "tripped", it will then also send a signal to a small wall mount base unit that just has little LED indicators on it that will show you which station has been violated. Walmart has a similar device only the one at Walmart only has 4 sensors, the one at Harbor Freight has 6 stations. A magnetic switch consists of 2 parts one part is just a magnet, the other half is a reed switch that is held open by the magnet. When the magnet is moved away from the switch, it causes the switch to close and turn on your alarm device. Home Depot and Walmart both sell an inexpensive home security system ONLINE ONLY. Called "MACE Wireless Home Security System". It will call up to 5 different phone numbers that you select if your home is intruded upon.
