A wood band saw is the perfect piece of equipment for cutting curves and straight lines into wood. They are also useful for cutting up stock and creating thin strips out of pre sawed wood. As they are so versatile many home DIY enthusiasts will own a band saw for cutting wood, but which type is best for you and the types of projects you will be completing on it?

Wood band saws are split into two types - floor standing cabinet types and smaller band saws that can be mounted in your workshop bench or fitted onto a cabinet. You do need to make sure you mount the smaller type though, or they can become unstable.

If you will only be using your band saw occasionally you would be better off with the smaller type. These are great for the home DIY fan who wants to be able to create their own projects using a band saw. The floor standing band saws are better for professionals who want more features and a larger motor and some would say greater control over the cutting.

Understanding the two main types of wood band saw should help you to decide which would be the best for you.
