Consider that your base here is neutral - so almost any color can be used to make the room "pop". Figure a color you like - say dark red for example. Now you can accessorize with that in the following ways. Get some throw pillows, a throw to drape over chair or couch, and a large area rug that has black and dark red in it. You can get some wrought iron black based lamps or use a can of spray paint to do your current lamps- keep shades neutral beige. Use black picture frames and beige mats for your pictures. Since it's an open plan, get a centerpiece for your dining table with black and red in it to tie the rooms together and some placemats to tie it together. Keep your drapes or blinds neutral (avoid white). Remember dark red is just an example - you could use green, yellow, etc. Also avoid pure primary colors - so green could be sage or moss green, yellow could be pale yellow - just not crayon colors. hope this helps.
